What to consider when choosing drone products for a new programme
If you are in the process of planning a new drone programme and unfamiliar with the products and accessories that are currently available, there are several factors you should consider:
Flight Duration — Make sure to have a clear idea about your specific use-case and the expected duration of your operations. It’s also essential to consider how long you intend to use your device. Less advanced drone technology tends to lack distance and battery. However, with a range of up to 8km and a 45 minutes of flight time per battery, there isn’t much that the DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise Series isn’t perfect for.
Imaging requirements — If you only need an aerial view of your site, a basic drone with a high-resolution camera will meet your needs. Or, for example, if you would like to perform detailed crop health inspections, you will need multispectral sensors to gather the data you require. Your application requirements would dictate what would be the most suitable sensor choice to mount to the drone. To top it all off, the DJI Mavic 3 has thermal capabilities too, and the Mavic 3 Multispectral version includes a red, green, NIR and red-edge sensor, combined with a 4/3” 20MP RGB sensor for crop health monitoring.
Portability — A small, extremely portable drone is the best choice for mobile teams such as emergency responders as they can quickly be deployed. However, a larger drone frame is necessary for applications requiring a large payload.
Flying conditions — If you wish to operate your drones in challenging weather conditions, you’ll need to pay special attention to wind resistance levels, battery technology and ingress-protection capabilities.
Budget — There is typically more than one available solution that can be suitable for your application, so there is often a price range to choose from. However, we can also assist with financing your drone purchase if the initial purchase cost is prohibitive.
Licensing — We can help guide you to get an understanding of what licensing you will require to get operational. We work with a network of licensing partners that can provide the certification required.
Insurance — Like any critical asset for your business, drones may also need to be insured. We offer various options to add protection plans to your drones, but you can also speak to us about our drone insurance solutions.
Training — When adopting new drone technology for your programme, you’ll need the right licensing and certification for best practices and results. At Prisma Technologies, you can access industry-leading flight, mapping, modelling, LiDAR, and thermal data analysis training. So, whether you’re looking to start a new programme or upscale your existing one, we have both the products and services to help you get your business up to speed and ahead of the competition.
Use cases for the DJI Mavic Thermal
The DJI Mavic Thermal offers class-leading performance in a proven commercial drone package that makes it the best thermal drone on the market as far as experts are concerned. The drone is equipped with a radiometric thermal camera that has a resolution of 640*512px, in addition to a 12MP tele zoom camera capable of producing 56x zoom (7x optical), and a ½” CMOS 48MP wide-angle camera. If you’re unsure how your organisation might benefit from this state-of-the-art compact thermal drone, consider the following use cases:
Utility infrastructure inspections – With a combination of thermal, zoom and a regular camera onboard, the DJI Mavic Thermal is the ideal drone with which to inspect utility infrastructure in remote locations. Potential points of failure in power line equipment are much easier to spot with the thermal imaging capability that it has to offer, and the generous flight time makes it easy to cover large areas before it is necessary to recharge or swap the batteries.
Mine inspections – The same capabilities that make the Mavic Thermal a great choice for utility infrastructure inspections also make it the perfect drone for mine inspections. In addition to the features mentioned above, its advanced obstacle avoidance system makes it an outstanding choice for busy mining sites.
Cattle farm surveys and monitoring applications – Keeping track of the movements of vast herds of cattle is a much easier task when you have the best thermal drone in Australia, especially during the hours of darkness.
Firefighting – With our DJI Mavic 3 Thermal packages, firefighting teams can use heat mapping to predict the path of fire and focus their attention on the most vulnerable structures or parts of a structure.
Search and rescue operations – Darkness has always been an issue for search and rescue teams, often necessitating a pause in operations until the following morning. However, with the DJI Mavic Thermal, emergency teams can continue to search throughout the night, enabling them to help more people than ever before.
Whatever your reasons for needing a thermal drone in Australia, you will find the DJI Mavic Thermal offers outstanding performance for the price.

What sets the DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral apart?
The main thing that sets the Multispectral model apart from other Mavic 3 Enterprise models are the 4x5 MP, G/R/RE/NIR onboard multispectral cameras that it boasts in addition to its built-in sunlight sensor for radiometric calibration. Combined with the standard 20 MP RGB camera that has a mechanical shutter and RTK capabilities, the Mavic Multispectral provides state-of-the-art imaging capabilities making it the perfect agricultural drone to monitor crops for chlorophyll content, nitrogen deficiency, crop disease and other crop health monitoring analytics. If you need a commercial drone primarily for monitoring crop growth on large farms in Australia, we highly recommend any of the Mavic 3 Multispectral packages that we have to offer.
Other features that make the Mavic 3 Multispectral perfect for agricultural applications
While the 4 x 5 MP multispectral cameras are almost certainly the most interesting feature of the DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral as far as agriculture industry users are concerned, many other features make this drone the best choice for crop monitoring and similar mapping applications:
43–minute cruise time – With an average flight time of 43 minutes, it’s possible to cover as much as 200 hectares on a single flight with the Mavic 3 Multispectral.
Fast charging – With 88W fast charging in the craft and a 100W battery charging hub available to purchase, you can get back up in the air faster when you use a Mavic 3 Multispectral drone.
Stable signal transmission over long distances – This Mavic 3 model uses 2 transmitting signals and 4 receiving signals to ensure stable image transmission and control over distances as far as 15 kilometres (8 kilometres in Australia).
Omnidirectional obstacle detection – This capability of the DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral helps to ensure a safe and trouble-free flight on every outing, even in the most challenging of environments.
Terrain-follow – The extra-wide FOV sensors that help to provide class-leading obstacle avoidance also give the Mavic 3 Multispectral its terrain-follow aerial survey capabilities. This makes it the perfect multispectral drone for agriculture applications and natural resource surveys in hilly and mountainous areas.
RTK Module for pinpoint accuracy – The onboard GPS receiver works in tandem with an RTK module to provide centimetre-level positional accuracy without the need for ground control points.

Though the M30 series can follow a predetermined flight path and take aerial photos, its surveying and mapping capabilities are not as accurate as alternative models. The RTK implementation on the aircraft is not survey-grade, and the wide-angle camera does not incorporate a mechanical shutter to allow for DJI TimeSync corrections.
You may need to consider another drone such as the DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise or the DJI Matrice 350 RTK + DJI Zenmuse P1 for survey-grade mapping accuracy.
-
In optimal weather conditions and free of interference, the M30 series (including the Matrice 30T) has an operational flying range of 8km. This is also true for the DJI M3E, M3T, M3M drones.
-
Yes. Every DJI Matrice 30 and Matrice 30T comes with a dedicated DJI RC Plus remote controller with a built-in screen. The RC Plus includes DJI Pilot 2 software for manual flight and mission flight planning. So, you do not need an up-to-date phone as DJI provides first-party hardware to operate the drone, which is available with every model in the M30 series. The DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise series includes the DJI RC Pro Enterprise remote controller, which also includes DJI Pilot 2 software, however, DJI has released an MSDK for the series, which means that it also supports 3rd-party software like DroneDeploy and UgCS.
-
Yes. The drone can be operated in Attitude (Atti) Mode using the Flight Mode Switch on the DJI RC Plus or the DJI RC Pro Enterprise. Generally, you should avoid flying in areas where the GNSS signal is weak or in narrow and confined spaces, as this can lead to potential flight hazards. Otherwise, the aircraft will be forced to enter Attitude mode, where the pilot will be responsible for directly providing inputs to control the aircraft's attitude.
So if you’re in an area with a bad signal, you’ll still be able to fly your drone without issues, but it is not recommended to do so unless you are competent in operating the aircraft in Atti Mode.
-
The M30 series and the M350 RTK can indeed fly in the rain as they have an ingress protection rating of IP55. The M30 series is designed to last and withstand heavy rainfall, dust ingress, and windy conditions at varying altitudes. If you’re worried about your drone sustaining damage in the rain, don’t be. However, rain droplets on the camera will affect visibility.
-
The M30 Series does not have ActiveTrack or a follow-me feature like DJI’s consumer drones. However, the M30 and M30T have SmartTrack, allowing the camera to follow a target and automatically zoom onto the target while the drone remains stationary. The M30 Series cannot be set to follow a target, but the camera can be locked onto a target while you manually fly the drone to follow the subject.
